SASHA
Ex-child prodigy, ex-stage partner of Paulina Rubio and Ricky Martin, ex-television actress, ex-presenter of television shows, Sasha remains true to her only rule: not to follow the rules. Now she ascends her throne as a rising star in the firmament of the ranchera (Mexican folk song).
From her native México to Boston, from Paris to Madrid, Sasha has harmonised music and acting for years. After achieving the pinnacle of success in her country, where she is a true mass phenomenon whose records have become cult objects, Sasha takes a whole new step: reinvention or death. It is a search for her genuine self, an unveiling of her true identity.
Which she has achieved in 2004 with “Por un amor”, an album in which she forsakes a musical past devoted to pop to completely embrace Mexican tradition. The recording took place in Madrid, where she found the peace to fully savour the spirit of the ranchera, to express herself in a heart-rending way, while including more intimate airs –with double bass and cello, unusual in this type of music- to reveal tradition under a new and unmistakable personal light.
Sasha believes –and shows- that traditional music, regardless of being traditional, can be treated in a different way, and can also be enjoyed by all kinds of public. That is her commitment: her voice takes up the challenge of significant songs and songwriters from the Mexican repertoire, moving away from strict ethnicity, while exploring the different stylesgenres such as the ranchera, the son and the huapango, even bringing back songs that should have never been forgotten.
“Por un amor” ranges from classics of José Alfredo Jiménez (Paloma negra, Ella) or Chavela Vargas (La noche de mi mal) to sounds closer to jazz (Te solté la rienda) and flamenco (El crucifijo de piedra, El Gustito). All through this journey we are guided by the dramatic but stylish voice –full of sensuality and defiance- of an unadulterated singer who thinks that rancheras are still an unexplored domain.
An experience which is worth living is to see Sasha grow bigger that the stage itself while singing in the old Mexican manner. |
